The London Festival of Architecture takes place across London this June. With an amazing programme of events and activities, we welcome everyone into the conversation around architecture and our city.

We’ll open the doors to iconic tours, architectural installations and stunning brick creations; energetic debates to Studio Lates; workshops in extraordinary spaces and tours of new places; exhibitions and bespoke artistic commissions; political discussions and lots of new construction – the London Festival of Architecture has something for everyone.

What makes us unique is that our vast programme of more than 400 exceptional events is delivered by a diverse mix of independent organisations and individuals – helping to radically democratise the debate about architecture and our city. Our theme for this year’s festival is ‘boundaries’.

Dulwich Pavilion 2019: The Colour Palace

The Colour Palace becomes the second pavilion to be built in the grounds of the Dulwich Picture Gallery for the London Festival of Architecture. This time around it has been designed by architecture studio Pricegore and artist Yinka Ilori. Called The Colour Palace, the pavilion's colourful exterior draws on the patterned textiles of Dutch prints found in the markets of Lagos and mirrored in Peckham's 'Little Lagos'.

John Soane's Dulwich Picture Gallery informs summer pavilion for London Festival of Architecture

The pavilion will be raised on four plinths formed from precast concrete drainage channels so as to provide unobstructed views of the gardens and the gallery itself, which was built in 1811 by British architect John Soane. It's bright colours are designed to contrast with the 19th century masonry. Lightweight timber louvres of The Colour Palace will painted in contrasting hues that will produce a colourful pattern of primary shapes. Each side's pattern is painted in a different colour-way, so it will appear to shift as visitors move around the structure. A courtyard space inside the pavilion will be used for events such as talks and theatre performances.

Founded by Dingle Price and Alex Gore, Pricegore architecture studio is based in Peckham, and London artist Ilori has Nigerian heritage. As a team, they drew upon their intersecting backgrounds to create a pavilion that aims to reflect London's multiculturalism.

Every Building on the Old Kent Road 2019

For the London Festival of Architecture 2019, Anise Gallery and Matthew White are curating a photographic documentation of the Old Kent Road. A homage to Ed Ruscha’s ‘Every Building on the Sunset Strip 1966’ the final work will be presented as an elevation of the full 1.8 miles on either side of the road, depicting the architecture, scale and culture.

Using the same methodology as Ruscha’s iconic work, the photographs will be taken from a moving truck that will drive along the Old Kent Road. Stitching them together in post production will then allow a complete overview of the road as one image, a never before seen perspective.

Old Kent Road has a long evolving history, the changes due to the Bakerloo Line Extension to Lewisham could however be the most sudden to date. The planned tube extension has caused major development plans to be drawn up including 20,000 new homes and 5000 new jobs over the next 2 decades. White’s photography will therefore become an important historical record and document of this London road.

Paper Castles

Paper Castles imagines alternative future architectures, floating above the past. Fifteen practices have been invited to create a paper model to sit on top of the cases in the V&A’s Architecture Gallery. These new models sit in dialogue with those underneath, building on this history to project into the future.

Part W——

Part W – The Alternative List

The Alternative List is the first public campaign by Part W that celebrates women who have consistently been overlooked and unrepresented in architecture. Since its inception in 1848, the Royal Gold Medal has been awarded to only one woman in her own right, and three husband and wife teams. The Alternative List is intended as a wry awareness-raising campaign, to bring attention to the continual gender imbalance in the way women across the industry are recognised and valued.

The Alternative List ask for nominations for women across the centuries who have, as the Royal Medal requires “made a significant contribution either directly or indirectly to architecture”. The resulting and continually evolving crowd-sourced list sees over a hundred nominations for women who have made incredible contributions to the built environment over the past 171 years, and throughout the world.

One of the London Festival of Architecture’s Core Events, “GOLD:Part W” on 13th June will see 10 guest speakers talk about those they have nominated for the alternative list. This is an opportunity to learn about a range of amazing women, both individuals and collectives.

Learning from Las Vegas in London

Hosted in London's Hippodrome Casino and inspired by classic postmodern text by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, Learning from Las Vegas In London presents an evening of symbolism, ornament and excess. this event will investigate architecture's "love affair with post modernism".

An evening of cabaret-style presentations will unravel the boundaries of taste, set in the heart of the capital, featuring talks, performances and films that will explore the book's legacy and London's aesthetics and architecture. Key curators, architects, designers and academics will examine our love affair with postmodernism and its origins in a city that has become an international symbol of extravagance.

Borderlands: Boundaries within the city state

London is wonderful metropolis but those that live and work in the city know that it is really the congregation of many different fiefdoms. Each place abides by its own rules and cherishes its own identity. There is no such things as a Londoner; people identify with their local community, as well as the physical context and history of their surroundings. This brand of fierce localism has a knock-on effect for architecture and planning but what happens to the places that fall between the gaps? Boroughs care less about the impact of something they build on their neighbour. Also, borders provide uncertainty about responsibility for particular areas and the populations that live there. Boundaries can therefore give rise to neglected landscapes but they also provide huge opportunities for innovation and experimentation. The Boundary Estate changed social housing for generations, can we use hidden hinterlands to create a better city?

Architecture for a New Generation

‘Manifestos: Architecture for a New Generation’ is a collaboration between London Festival of Architecture and the Design Museum, highlighting work by an emerging generation of voices in architecture who are shaping a new future for London.

The challenges that London poses to young people are shaping the boundaries of architecture and what it means to be an architect in this city. Migration, the housing crisis, a constrained jobs market, precarious working conditions, cuts to public services and facilities, racial discrimination and gang violence are just some of the defining challenges facing young people today. In London, they present urgent and complex spatial challenges for the city.

Responding to these conditions, a new generation of architecture voices are proposing alternative visions for London’s urban landscape. These manifestos prioritise collaboration, dialogue, learning and action in response to the real material and social conditions of a city in flux. They are often steered by collectives over individuals focused on public organisation and democratisation.

This event brings a group of emerging voices in architecture that are expanding the parameters of what architecture can be, who London is for and what its future holds.

The Quintessential English Garden

Lily Jencks Studio

Lily Jencks Studio will install a pop-up garden ‘The Quintessential English Garden: what does it mean to be native?’ at Cabot Square in Canary Wharf. What does it mean to be local, rooted and originating in a place - like an indigenous plant that has always belonged – or global, transient and non-native? It will challenge people to reassess the boundaries around the history and language of the terms native/exotic, and natural/man-made, with a playful garden rich with reference and meaning.

Stourhead typifies the English Picturesque, allowing nature to flow naturally, and people to wander from one idea to the next. Similarly, our garden uses leaf-shaped landform seats, arranged around a large printed image of Stourhead planted with trees, perennials and graphic ideas, that bring this scene to life.
